the way you react to my flames—is that unusual, too?"

He met her gaze. "I don't know. You're the first dragon whose flames I've been unable

to block."

A look of pride settled on her face and her eyes glimmered. "Really? Because I'm so

powerful?"

"I thought it was because I was out of practice, but now I'm not sure." The second

she'd hit him in her apartment, he'd thrown up his defenses, and it hadn't made a bit

of difference. He knew his barriers had been secure, and she'd burst right through

them. If he were in the slaying business, it would seriously concern him. As it was, it

made him feel better, knowing she had a defense against him if he did lose control.

Not that he planned to, but the more time he spent around her, the more his old

slayer tendencies were resurfacing, and it was getting more and more difficult to deny

who he was.

Theresa smiled. "I think it's because I'm a brilliant dragon. So maybe all your slayer

friends will fall at my feet. They will all lust after my body and—"

"Let's practice your defenses so you don't have to use the flames," he interrupted.

She raised her brow. "Why are you so testy?"

"Because I'm chained up in Satan's torture chamber. Can we get to work so I can get

out of here?"

"Fine." She scooted closer to him, and he caught a whiff of her scent. Not her dragon

scent, but her aroma as a woman and a human. She smelled like vanilla and soap, and

something soft and vulnerable that made him want to grab her and protect her.

Hah. As if she'd let him do that. Which made him want to do it even more.

"Zeke? What else do I need to know?"

He dragged his thought away from her softness and tried to focus. "Okay, so when we

use our pheromones, we try to sneak up on the dragon and release them before the

dragon knows we're there. If they see us coming and shut down their sensors, then

we're screwed." She was listening so intently he felt uncomfortable. "Very few slayers

can take down a fully functioning adult dragon."

"You can."

"What?"

"The slayer who orchestrated the Cleansing was said to be able to best any dragon."

She met his gaze, but there was no accusation in her face. Just curiosity. "That's you,

right?"

He grunted. "In the past. Not anymore."

She nodded. "It's good for me to learn from the best. Continue."

"First, you'll have to learn how to block my scent." He could feel her toes wiggling

against his hip and he instinctively shifted his hips to be closer to her. "But then the

tough part is learning recovery."

Her forehead furrowed. "What's that?"

"My team will sneak up on you and hit you with pheromones before you can block

them." That battle strategy was a little embarrassing when he explained it like that.

Felt like cheating. But it was the destiny of slayers, and they had no choice in the

matter. "You need to learn how to recover once you've been hit."

She chewed her lower lip. "I practiced that with chocolate cake. Slayer scent is way

tougher, but it's the same concept, right?"

"Same concept," he agreed.
